Robert Eugene Messick was born on May 1, 1941 in Shelby, North Carolina. He attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1959 to 1966. During these years he was active in the College Union. In May 1966 he received a bachelor's degree in product design. Upon graduation he received an appointment to the North Carolina State University School of Design as an instructor of product design for the 1966 - 1967 academic year.
